"Color is how eye see what you see : a stairway to the cellophane stars."

A transformation of self and a creation of one's own hybrid culture and voice. Immigrating to Korea from the U.S., as a Korean, was challenging for Laura Kim and brought her attention towards how much cultural identity distinguishes a person on how one is perceived even within one's own recognized origin. When Kim returned to the States in 2006, a new sense of timeless dislocation occurred. This idea of 'dislocation' she felt blended into her work along with her interests in the process of transformation and cultural re-adaptation. Through videos and performances (both presented in and out of the screen), the projects derive from the self and the surroundings that interact with the self. Whether it is geared towards the external presence or the internal psyche of the viewers, Kim invites the spectators as tourists to venture a new territory and revisit their own experiences. Inspired by numbers, melting crayons, sci-fi day dreams and sparkling crystals, she is currently obsessed with wolves and radioactive spiders.
